Become a Habitat Homeowner


Listed below you will find the basic requirements needed in order to apply for a Habitat for Humanity home in Genesee County:

  • You must have lived in Genesee County for the past 6 months.
  • You must  be a US citizen.
  • You must not have had a bankruptcy in the last 24 months.
  • You must not have had a foreclosure in the last 3 years.
  • How Families Are Chosen

    A Family Service Committee consisting of Genesee County citizens considers applications based on the following criteria:


    I have a need

  • I do not own my own home.
  • I am currently living in substandard housing (overcrowding, rent is subsidized, home is in poor physcial condition, rent costs more than 30% of my income, etc)
  • My annual income falls within this range
  • Family Size Annual Income
    1 person $12,600-$21,000
    2 people $14,400-$24,000
    3 people $16,200-$27,000
    4 people $18,000-$30,000
    5 people $19,440-$32,400
    6 people $20,880-$34,800


    I have the ability to pay

  • I do not have excessive credit card debt or multiple bills in collection.
  • I have not declared bankruptcy past 24 months or had a foreclosure within the past three years.
  • I have no outstanding court ordered judgments
  • I pay my rent on time.

  • I am willing to partner with Habitat

  • Contribute 300-500 hours of “sweat equity” depending on family size.
  • Attend a first time home buyer education course.
  • Pay approximate $1500 towards purchase cost of home
  • I am willing to live in an area where Habitat has homes and understand that I cannot select the location of the home.

    Will you mail an application to me?

    No. After filling out a Homeownership Interest Form, If it is determined that you are a potential candidate for Homeownership, you will be invited to attend an in-office meeting with a Family Service Committee member who will walk you through the application. The application is long and it is essential that someone helps you to fill it out correctly.


    I know nothing about building a home, how am I going to be able to help on a job site?

    At each job site we have a site supervisor who will instruct you in what needs to be done. Every job is important, even the clean up. You will learn important skills for the upkeep of your home.
